MIAMI - MARLINS ROOKIE OUTFIELDER SAUL NEWSOME WAS A SURPRISE ADDITION TO THE TEAM'S POSTSEASON ROSTER.

NEWSOME, WITH ALL OF EIGHT MAJOR LEAGUE AT-BATS, SURPRISED AGAIN IN HIS FIRST POSTSEASON AT-BAT.

"SHOCKED IS MORE LIKE IT," SAID PIRATES MANAGER HAROLD BAINES OF NEWSOME'S WALK-OFF THREE-RUN BLAST THAT GIFTED FLORIDA A 6-5 WIN AND A 1-0 DIVISIONAL SERIES LEAD.

CLOSER DERRICK BYRNES, 37, BROUGHT A SPARKLING 1.44 SEASON ERA WITH 40 SAVES AGAINST THE 29-YEAR-OLD NEWSOME, WHO HAD ALL OF 28 DAYS OF MLB EXPERIENCE WHEN CALLED OFF THE BENCH TO PINCH-HIT IN THE BOTTOM OF THE NINTH AND THE MARLINS TRAILING 5-3.

"IT WAS A PRETTY GOOD FASTBALL," NEWSOME RECOUNTED OVER A LOUD LOCKER ROOM BUZZ. "IT SORT OF TAILED INTO ME AND I GOT SOME GOOD WOOD ON IT."

GOOD TO THE TUNE OF A 444-FOOT UPPER DECK DRIVE THAT TOUCHED OFF A RACOUS TWO-HOUR LONG CELEBRATION IN THE STANDS.

RICO CASTO  WENT 3-3 WITH A HOMER, TWO RBIs AND A PAIR OF RUNS FOR PITTSBURGH.

MIAMI - PIRATES MANAGER HAROLD BAINES MADE TWO GAME-MANAGEMENT ERRORS SUNDAY - AND EACH LED TO A FLORIDA RUN IN A 2-0 MARLINS WIN THAT GAVE THEM 2-0 DIVISIONAL SERIES LEAD.

BAINES' FLORIDA COUNTERPART, CHAYSIN YABU, DEFTLY MANAGED HIS PITCHING STAFF, SURPRISINGLY REMOVING STARTER JONNY BLUM AFTER FIVE INNINGS IN A SCORELESS GAME.

YABU CONTINUED WITH ALL THE RIGHT MOVES WITH HIS NEXT SIX PITCHERS, AND ALVIN PARKER MADE BAINES PAY FOR LEAVING ONE PITCHER IN AND BRINGING IN THE WRONG PITCHER AS PARKER DROVE IN BOTH FLORIDA RUNS.

BAINES KEPT RELIEVER JIMMY ELMORE IN TO FACE PARKER IN A CRUCIAL SIXTH-INNING SITUATION. ELMORE HAD GOTTEN TWO OUTS, BUT HAD GIVEN UP FOUR HITS BEFORE PARKER'S FIELDER'S CHOICE DROVE IN A RUN.

PARKER ADDED A SOLO SHOT OFF GARY MALASKA IN THE EIGHTH, WITH PARKER BRINGING IN A .500 CAREER AVERAGE (10-FOR-20) WITH FIVE HOMERS AGAINST THE RELIEVER.

PITTSBURGH - DAVIS KOZAR HAD ONE THOUGHT - AND THAT SINGLE MENTALIZATION SENT THE MARLINS INTO THE NL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES.

WITH VETERAN LEFTY RELIEVER AROLDIS CHAPMAN ON THE MOUND FOR THE PIRATES, KOZAR SAID HE WAS PLANNING AHEAD TO HIS NINTH-INNING AT-BAT, HE WOULD COME UP SECOND, WHILE IN THE FIELD IN THE BOTTOM OF THE EIGHTH WITH THE SCORES LEVEL AT 8.

"REALLY, I WAS THINKING FASTBALL, LOW AND AWAY, ALL THE WAY," THE SWITCH-HITTING LEFTFIELDER SAID. "MAYBE EVEN GET IT INTO THE AIR A BIT AND LET THE DRIFT CARRY IT."

THE 7 MPH WIND BLOWING STRAIGHT TO RIGHT OBLIGED, AND KOZAR'S SOLO SHOT GAVE FLORIDA THE RUN IT NEEDED ON A NIGHT WHEN THE MOMENTUM HAD CLEARLY SHIFTED TO PITSBURGH, AS THE PIRATES HAD RALLIED FROM 8-2 DOWN.

"THEY HAD US ON OUR BACK FEET," KOZAR ADMITTED.

FLORIDA MOVES ON TO PLAY THE REDS-PADRES NLDS WINNER.

CINCINNATI - A BEAUTY THIS WASN'T.

UGLY ENOUGH THAT FLORIDA STARTING PITCHER KEVIN ALVAREZ HIT HOME RUNS IN FIRST TWO AT-BATS - BUT BARELY MADE IT THROUGH THE REQUISITE FIVE INNINGS NEEDED TO PICK UP THE WIN.

KYLE RAMIREZ RIPPED TWO HOMERS AS WELL, AS THE MARLINS HELD ON TIGHT TO GATHER UP A 9-7 WIN OVER THE REDS IN THE NLCS OPENER.

WHILE ALVAREZ DID HIS OFFENSIVE DAMAGE EARLY, HE ALMOST WRECKED HIS WORK WHILE ON THE MOUND IN THE FOURTH AND FIFTH INNINGS, HELPING THE REDS CHOP AN 7-0 DEFICIT TO 8-4, IN LARGE PART BECAUSE OF FIVE BASES ON BALLS.

IT WAS THE MARLINS' FOURTH STRAIGHT POSTSEASON WIN AFTER SWEEPING PITTSBURGH IN THE NLDS, BUT FLORIDA MANAGER CHAYCIN YABU WASN'T THRILLED WITH ANOTHER CLOSE GAME.

"WINNING FOUR GAMES BY JUST FIVE TOTAL RUNS IS LIVING LIFE TOO MUCH ON THE EDGE," HE SAID.

CINCINNATI - CHICKS DIG THE LONG BALL.

CARLOS SANTANA AND MANY OF HIS TEAMMATES ARE EASILY OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER ESPN'S ONE-TIME RATHER RAUNCHY SLOGAN FROM THE 2000s, BUT, ALAS, SWARMS OF SCANTILY-DRESSED WOMEN DID NOT MATERIALIZE, EVEN AFTER SANTANA HAMMERED THREE OF FLORIDA'S SEVEN ROUND-TRIPPERS SUNDAY NIGHT.

ALL THOSE BOMBS LED TO A 9-5 MARLINS WIN THAT PUT FLORIDA HALF-WAY TO ITS FIRST WORLD SERIES APPEARANCE SINCE THE BACK-TO-BACK TITLES IN 2020 AND 2021.

ALVIN PARKER, DAVIS KOZAR, NELSON CASE AND PITCHER BILL SALE ALL HIT HOMERS FOR FLORIDA.

MIAMI - THE FIRST THREE INNINGS CONTINUED TO BE KIND TO THE MARLINS.

FLORIDA HAS NOW OUTSCORED OPPONENTS 14-0 IN THE OPENING TRIO OF FRAMES OVER THE PAST FOUR GAMES AS FLORIDA BOLTED TO A 3-0 LEAD IN THOSE INNINGS TUESDAY IN A 7-4 WIN OVER THE REDS.

FLORIDA LEADS THE NLCS 3-0 AFTER BILLY BUTLER AND KYLE RAMIREZ EACH HOMERED AND COMBINED TO KNOCK IN FIVE RUNS.

SHINGO MATSUI PICKED UP THE WIN AFTER SHUTTING OUT THE REDS FOR SEVEN INNINGS ON ONLY THREE HITS.

FLORIDA - LET THE FESTIVITIES BEGIN.

BONFIRES OUTSIDE JACK McKEON FIELD MERGED WITH A LOW-RISING ORANGE-FIREBALL OF A SUN THIS MORNING AS SIZZLING AS THE MARLINS (7-0 IN POSTSEASON PLAY) THEMSELVES.

KEVIN ALVAREZ HELPED PUT FLORIDA BACK INTO THEWORLD SERIES FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2021 WITH SIX-INNINGS OF ONE-RUN BALL AND MARLIN BATTERS ERUPTED FOR 18 HITS IN AN 8-2 GAME FOUR WIN OVER THE REDS.

THE MARLINS' FIRST THREE BATTERS (JIMMY KENNEDY, KYLE RAMIREZ AND ALVIN PARKER) COMBINED FOR EIGHT HITS IN 13 AT-BATS, FIVE RUNS AND FIVE RBIs. LIKELY NL MVP AARON CONNER, HITTING CLEANUP, KNOCKED IN A PAIR OF RUNS ON TWO HITS AND SUPERSUB CARLOS SANTANA HIT HIS FIFTH HOMER IN HIS LAST SIX AT-BATS.

FLORIDA HIT .376 IN THE SWEEP WITH AN EVEN 4.00 ERA.

THE MARLINS WILL TAKE ON THE MARINERS, WHO CAPTURED GAME 7 OF THE ALCS AT NEW YORK WITH A ?-? WIN OVER THE YANKEES.

MIAMI - MARLINS LEADOFF JIM KENNEDY HITTER KNOWS WHAT HE DID TO BEGIN THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRST - HE'S LOOKING FOR ANSWERS AS TO WHY IT DIDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN IN THE SEVENTH INNING.

KENNEDY SMOKED A BALL TO SEATTLE LEFT FIELDER BARACK NOBLES WITH TWO ON AND TWO OUT AND FLORIDA TRAILING BY A RUN.

"I KNOCKED THE (CRAP) OUT OF THAT BALL," KENNEDY SAID. "HIT IT MUCH BATTER THAN THE KNOCK (HOME RUN) IN THE FIRST (INNING)."

KENNEDY SAID WITH A 14 MPH WIND SAILING TO DEAD LEFT FIELD, HE THOUGHT THE SEVENTH-INNING DRIVE WAS LONG GONE.

"IT WAS LIKE, 'OK, GONE, WE'RE LEADING,' WHEN I HIT IT," KENNEDY SAID.

"THE BALL BASICALLY WENT RIGHT TO THE GUY (NOBLES)," SAID MARLINS MANAGER CHAYSON YABU. "A LITTLE LIFT, AND I BELIEVE WE LEAVE (FOR SEATTLE) WITH A (2-0) SERIES LEAD."

INSTEAD, FLORIDA AND THE MARINERS HAVE EACH POSTED A WORLD SERIES WIN, AS THE ACTION SHIFTS WEST.

MIAMI - DOH.

TURNS OUT HAVING YOUR CLOSER AVAILABLE IN THE 18TH INNING IS A VALUABLE WEAPON.

WHILE HOMER SIMPSON, PATRIARCH OF "THE SIMPSONS," THE LONGEST RUNNING TELEVISION SHOW IN ITS 48TH SEASON, MIGHT UTTER THAT WORD IF HE WAS A MANAGER, IT WAS THE MARLINS' HOMER VILLASMIL MUTTERING "DOH" AFTER TAKING HIS SECOND STRAIGHT WORLD SERIES LOSS.

THAT LED TO THE MARINERS NO DOUBT THINKING "DOUGH."

MEMBERS OF THE WORLD CHAMPIONS FROM SEATTLE WILL EARN $162,000 APIECE AFTER WINNING WHAT WILL LIKELY HOLD THROUGH HISTORY AS THE BEST FINAL GAME EVER, A TITANIC 4-3 WIN IN 18 MAMMOTH INNINGS AGAINST FLORIDA.

"I WON'T SLEEP FOR A WEEK, I'M SO WOUND UP," SAID RUBEN TEJADA, OWNER OF THE GAME-WINNING RBI. "I AM DRAINED AND SHAKING WITH JOY."

INDEED, PLAYERS ON BOTH CLUBS WERE SO GLAZED, SOME WERE READY FOR THE GAME TO CONTINUE. AFTER TEJADA THREW OUT A FLORIDA HITTER TO END THE GAME, MARINERS FIRST BASEMAN ORLANDO VALDEZ SIMPLY NODDED AT TEJADA AND JOGGED BACK INTO THE DUGOUT AMIDST HEARTACHE AND CELEBRATION.

"NO DOUBT, I WAS READY FOR MORE," VALDEZ SAID. "WHAT AN EPIC GAME TO BE PART OF."

THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRST STARTED SAME WAY AS GAME SIX DID, WITH A SOLO HOME RUN FROM AARON CONNER.

THE MARLINS GOT ANOTHER RUN IN THE NEXT FRAME, THEN NEEDED A RUN IN THE EIGHTH TO MAKE IT 3-3.

IT WOULD BE A FULL NINE INNINGS OF HUGE PITCHES AND DEFENSIVE PLAYS BEFORE THE SCOREBOARD WOULD BRIGHTEN AGAIN. JHAN MARINEZ WOULD PITCH FIVE-INNINGS OF ONE-HIT BALL FROM THE 12TH THROUGH 16TH INNINGS. JAMIE SUGGS SHUT DOWN FLORIDA IN THE BOTTOM OF THE 17TH BEFORE TEJADA STOLE THE SHOW.

TOM MAY DOUBLED WITH ONE DOWN, AND AN OUT LATER, TEJADA'S SINGLE DOWN THE THIRD-BASELINE GAVE THE MARINERS THEIR 4-3 LEAD. CLOSER TIM LANDERS PITCHED A SCARY 18TH INNING AND SEATTLE BECAME WORLD CHAMPS, WITH WINS IN THE FINAL TWO GAMES, BOTH BY SINGLE RUNS.

TEJADA'S ONE-RUN TRIPLE IN THE FIFTH ALLOWED THE MARINERS TO DRAW EVEN AT 2-2, THEN VETERAN TIM GRISSOM KNOCKED IN A SIXTH-INNING RUN TO GIVE SEATTLE ITS FIRST LEAD.

FLORIDA ROOKIE SAUL NEWSOME CAME UP AS AN EIGHTH-INNING PINCH-HITTER AS LANDERS, NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH NED FLANDERS, LIMBERED UP IN THE BULLPEN. NEWSOME DOUBLED AND LATER SCORED ON JIM KENNEDY'S BASE KNOCK TO SET UP HISTORY'S MOST-THRILLING GAME SEVEN.

VILLASMIL, ALSO TAGGED WITH A GAME THREE LOSS, WAS THE NINTH FLORIDA PITCHER WHILE SIX MARINER HURLERS COMBINED FOR 22 STRIKEOUTS.

SEATTLE CF EARL DECLAN WAS NAMED WORLD SERIES MVP AFTER HITTING .524 (11-FOR-21) WITH FOUR RBIs.

IT'S OVER
CONNER MAKES IT OFFICIAL
SLUGGER SIGNS WITH MARLINS

BY PAT DORWIN

SPORTSWRITER

CHICAGO DAILY SUN

MIAMI - IT'S OVER.

THIS IS THE END, MY FRIEND.

TO PARAPHRASE A COUPLE OF OLD ROCK SONGS IS EASY - TO SAY GOOD-BYE TO AN ICON IS NOT.

AARON CONNER MADE HIS CHICAGO DEPARTURE OFFICIAL SATURDAY, ANNOUNCING HE WAS INKING A SIX-YEAR DEAL WITH THE MARLINS AFTER A STELLAR CAREER WITH THE WHITE SOX.

"IT WAS TIME," CONNER SIMPLY ANNOUNCED. "WE ALL KNOW IT WAS THE RIGHT TIME."

INDEED, IT WAS.

"TO BE TRUTHFUL, IT WAS PAST AARON'S TIME TO LEAVE," SAID LARRY FEENEY, LONGTIME SOX GM. "WE HAVE BEEN SUCH A POOR TEAM THE LAST FOUR OR FIVE YEARS, WE PROBABLY LOOKED LIKE WE HELD AARON HOSTAGE."

IN THE END, JIM MORRISON SANG FOR ROCK PIONEERS THE DOORS MORE THAN 60 YEARS AGO. IT'S OVER, MIKE RENO ADMITTED FOR LOVERBOY IN THE EARLY 1980s. SOX FANS SAID GOOD-BYE TO A FORMER SOUTHERN BOY SATURDAY.

"IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY A WEEK AGO WHEN AARON CAME FROM TENNESSEE (KNOXVILLE) AND MADE CENTERFIELD HIS OWN AS AN 18-YEAR-OLD," SAID OZZIE GUILLEN, CONNER'S INITIAL SOX MANAGER IN 2011. "TODAY, WE SEE A 33-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO WILL GO TO THE HALL OF FAME IN HIS WHITE SOX CAP."

AND QUITE POSSIBLY AS BASEBALL'S GREATEST HOME RUN HITTER. CONNER FINISHED HIS SOX CAREER, AT LEAST PART ONE, WITH 594 HOMERS IN 15 SEASONS. HE HIT 40 OR MORE HOMERS IN EIGHT OF THOSE YEARS, INCLUDING 47 IN 2025, AFTER COLLECTING 43 COMBINED IN 2023-24.

"AARON, OF COURSE, HAD HIS ONLY SERIOUS INJURY (BROKEN ARM AFTER 93 GAMES) IN 2023," SAID AN AL SCOUT. "I THINK WE'LL ALL LOOK BACK AT 2024 AS JUST AN ANOMALY."

CONNER HIT .306 IN 2024, BUT HIS HOME RUN AND RBI TOTALS FELL TO 21 AND 76. HE HAD DRIVEN IN AT LEAST 100 RUNS YEARLY FROM 2012 TO 2022.

"AN AMAZING STAT," THE SCOUT SAID.

CONNER HIT .291 OVER THE COURSE OF HIS CAREER WITH 1,667 RBIs. BELOW IS A YEARLY LOOK AT HIS BATTING AVERAGE, HOMER AND RBI NUMBERS.

"HALL OF FAME NUMBERS FOR SURE," FEENEY SAID.

FORMER SOX STAR MIGUEL CABRERA RETIRED EARLIER THIS OFFSEASON ATOP THE ALL-TIME HOME RUN LADDER WITH 832. A TYPICAL SEASON FROM CONNER SEEES HIM WALLOP 40 HOMERS - IF HE KEEPS THAT PACE IN MIAMI, CONNOR WILL HAVE 834 HOME RUNS AFTER HIS SIXTH SEASON.
