NEW YORK - WHILE FIDEL LORENZ TOYED WITH THE YANKEE HITTERS THROUGH FOUR INNINGS - HIS MARLINS TEAMMATES WERE RIPPING THE WRAPPING OFF GIFTS FROM HIS YANKEES COUNTERPART.
LORENZ TOSSED FOUR-INNINGS OF NO-HIT BALL SATURDAY AFTERNOON WHILE SEATTLE POUNDED NEW YORK STARTER JUNG-HEE TSAO FOR FIVE RUNS AT THE SAME TIME AS THE MARINERS POSTED A 9-2 WIN TO TAKE A 2-0 LEAD IN THE ALDS.
LORENZ, 19-9 WITH A 3.24 ERA ON THE SEASON, ALLOWED HITS IN JUST THREE INNINGS - AND ONE OF THOSE WAS WITH TWO OUTS IN THE NINTH INNING.
SEATTLE GENERALLY ROUGHED UP TSAO STARTING IN THE FIRST INNING. AARON CONNER FOLLOWED EARL DECLAN'S SINGLE WITH A TWO-RUN BLAST TO DEEP RIGHT. MARCO NAVARRO ADDED A SOLO SHOT TO MAKE IT 3-0.
DEREK BINGHAM'S DINGER IN THE NEXT FRAME UPPED THE FLORIDA LEAD TO 4-0 AND A FOURTH INNING RUN MADE IT 5-0.
CHRISTINE DEKHI BROKE UP THE NO-HITTER IN THE FIFTH AS NEW YORK PARLAYED FOUR HITS AND A WALK TO CUT THE GAP TO 5-2.
DECLAN'S HOMER KEYED A THREE-RUN MARINER SEVENTH AS THE SERIES MOVES TO SEATTLE.
TSAO GAVE UP EIGHT HITS AND FIVE RUNS IN THREE INNINGS WHILE LORENZ WENT 8.2 INNINGS, GIVING UP SIX HITS WITH EIGHT WHIFFS.

NEW YORK - A GAME PLAN IS OFTEN EASIER TO TALK ABOUT THAN PUT INTO PLAY.
THE MARINERS FOUND THAT OUT IN GAME ONE OF THE ALDS AT YANKEE STADIUM.
FACING GIL PADILLA, MULTIPLE MVP AND CY YOUNG AWARD WINNER, SEATTLE HAD IMPLEMENTED A GAME PLAN BASED ON A STRATEGY DEVISED BY HEAD ADVANCE SCOUT STEVE FINLEY.
ON TWO DIFFERENT OUTINGS, THE EX-MAJOR LEAGUER HAD NOTICED PADILLA HAD CHANGED HIS OWN GAME PLAN WHEN HE FACED THE TWO TEAMS, WHICH FINLEY REFUSED TO IDENTIFY.
"SUFFICE TO SAY, THEY WERE SIMILAR OFFENSIVELY TO US," FINLEY ALLOWED. "IT'S NO SECRET NOW: WE FIGURED PADILLA WAS GOING TO THROW MUCH MORE OFF-SPEED STUFF TO US THAN HE NORMALLY DOES."
BUT WITH THE MARINERS LOOKING FASTBALL SECOND, THEY STILL WENT SCORELESS THROUGH THREE INNINGS AND FOUND THEMSELVES TRAILING PADILLA 2-0.
"THAT'S NOT WHERE YOU WANT TO BE AGAINST A GUY LIKE PADILLA," SAID DH TODD BENTLER. "BUT WE ALL REMINDED OURSELVES TO TAKE AN EXTRA BREATH AND SLOW DOWN."
IT WORKED.
LEADOFF HITTER EDUARDO VILLEGAS WAITED ON A CHANGE-UP AND DOUBLED DOWN THE LEFT-FIELD LINE TO START THE FOURTH. EARL DECLAN MOVED VILLEGAS TO THIRD WITH A FIRST-BASE GROUND OUT, THEN AAARON CONNER GROUNDED TO SECOND TO MAKE IT 2-1.
IN THE FIFTH INNING, THE WAITING GAME REALLY PAID OFF TO START THE FRAME. BOTH RAY ALMONTE AND BENTLER DRILLED OFF-SPEED HOMERS AND SUDDENLY THE Ms WERE IN FRONT 3-2.
NEW YORK GOT A RUN BACK IN ITS HALF OFF STARTER TOMMY WALBECK (1-0, 6 IP, 7 HITS AND 3 RUNS).
TWO SEVENTH INNING RUNS OPENED A 5-3 CUSHION FOR SEATTLE AND STELLAR RELIEF PITCHING BY NO. 4 STARTER EDUARDO TORREZ (2.1 IP, ONE HIT) ALLOWED 40-YEAR-OLD CLOSER RODGER METZ TO GET A PAIR OF OUTS AND THE SAVE.

MARLINS RULE THE WORLD!
SECOND STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP FOR FLORIDA
BY LEE GANNON
SPORTSWRITER
MIAMI MORNING SUN
NEW YORK - IT'S NOT OFTEN A GAME OPENS WITH THE FIRST HITTER HOMERING.
MORE RARE EVEN THEN IS WHEN THE LEADOFF HITTER'S COUNTERPART FOLLOWS SUIT IN HIS HALF OF THE INNING.
RARER YET, THAT BOTH HOMERS LANDED IN THE NEARLY IDENTICAL SPOT MAY EVEN BE CALLED MIRACULOUS.
BUT IT WASN'T MIRACLES THAT PUSHED THE MARLINS TO THEIR SECOND STRAIGHT WORLD SERIES - IT WAS PLAIN POWER THAT HELPED FLORIDA TO A 11-8 WIN SUNDAY OVER THE YANKEES TO WRAP UP THE SERIES FOUR GAMES TO ONE.
GEOFFREY BATISTA LAUNCHED AN OPPOSITE FILED BLAST TO RIGHT TO OPEN THE GAME - ONE OF HIS TWO HOMERS AND A TOTAL OF SEVEN DINGERS FOR FLORIDA.
ALIVIN PARKER SINGLE IN ANOTHER RUN AND IT WAS THE MARLINS AHEAD 2-0 BEFORE YANKEE LEADOFF HITTER BYRON WILKES HOMERED TO ALMOST THE SAME SPOT A BATISTA TO MAKE IT 2-1.
FLORIDA STARTER KEVIN BLACK LASTED JUST 2.1 INNINGS, GIVING UP 5 RUNS ON 5 HITS AND A PAIR OF WALKS. BUT HIS OFFENSE HAD PROVIDED FIVE RUNS IN THE THIRD BEFORE NEW YORK FOLLOWED WITH FOUR IN ITS HALF TO PUT THE MARLINS UP 7-6 AFTER THREE INNINGS.
THE YANKEES HAD TIED IT 2-2 IN THE SECOND BEFORE THE MARLINS' BIG INNING. NEW YORK STARTERNNNN HUNG AROUND TO GIVE UP A LEADOFF BLAST TO BATISTA HIS EIGHTH HOMER OF THE POSTSEASON, GOOD FOR 1Y RBI's.
PEDRO MORALES SLASHED A DOUBLE IN THE LEFT-CENTER BLAST AND ALL-TIME HOME RUN LEADER AARON CONNER UNLEASHED A MAMMOTH SHOT THAT LANDED IN THE HIGH CENTERFIELD BLEACHERS AND IT WAS 5-2.
NNNNN STAYED IN TO WITNESS BACK-TO-BACK BLASTS BY JOHNNY NEWHAN AND CHAD WILLIAMS, BUT THE YANKEES KNOCKED BLACK OUT AND IT WAS A CONVERTED TRY TO TWO PENALTY KICKS, 7-6.
DOUG DONALDSON PITCHED AN INNING, ALLOWING A RUN AND CASEY RAMIRO COULDN'T STOP THE YANKEES EITHER, ALLOWING TWO RUNS 2.2 INNINGS.
MATT HAYEK SETTLED THINGS DOWN WITH 1.1 INNINGS OF SCORLESS WORK AND ANDY MITCHELL FOLLOWED WITH A SCORELESS INNING BEFORE KEVIN ALVAREZ GOT THE LAST TWO OUTS.
THE YANKEES TIED THE GAME AT 7 IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FIFTH BUT THE MARLINS' UNTIED IT THE NEXT HALF INNNING WHEN JOVANNY MONTANEZ SINGLED IN WILLIAMS.
IT LIKED THE SEVENTH WAS ALL SHE WROTE AS SHINGO SHINJO ROCKED A DEEP BALL AND NEWHAN'S SECOND BLAST OF THE GAME - A TWO-RUN RIP, LIFTING THE MARLINS TO AN 11-7 LEAD.

MARLINS RULE THE WORLD!
SECOND STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP FOR FLORIDA

MIAMI- YANKEES PITCHER GIL PADILLA WAS BRILLIANT - BUT JUST NOT OUTSTANDING LONG ENOUGH IN GAME FOUR OF THE WORLD SERIES.
PADILLA SLAMMED THE DOOR, ALLOWING FLORIDA A SINGLE RUN THROUGH SEVEN INNINGS AS THE YANKEES HAD BUILT A 3-1 LEAD. BUT TROUBLE CAME IN THE EIGHTH AND PADILLA WAS CHARGED WITH ALL THREE MARLINS RUNS AS FLORIDA RALLIED FOR A 5-3 WIN AND A 3-1 SERIES LEAD.
"PADILLA WAS JUST TOYING WITH US AT TIMES," CATCHER ALVIN PARKER. "BUT WE KEPT OUR CONCENTRATION LEVELS HIGH AND EVENTUALLY HIT HIS FEW MISTAKES."
PARKER'S SOLO BLAST IN THE SECOND INNING HAD STAKED MARLINS ACE TOMMY SULLIVAN TO A 1-0 LEAD. BUT TOBIAS BARBER'S HOMER IN THE FIFTH MARKED A RUN OF THREE STRAIGHT INNINGS THE NEW YORK PIT SINGLE RUNS ON THE BOARD TO TAKE A 3-1 LEAD INTO THE TOP OF THE EIGHTH.
PADILLA STRUCK OUT ROOKIE JARROD NAYLOR, THEN SURRENDERED A JOVANNY MONTANEZ DOUBLE. JOHNNY HEWHAN THEN CRUSHED A HIGH DRIVE INTO THE RIGHT-FIELD SEATS TO MAKE IT 3-3.
"IT WAS A GOOD CHANGE-UP," PADILLA SAID. "GIVE THAT GUY (NEWHAN) CREDIT, I THOUGHT HE WAS TOO FAR IN FRONT OF IT, BUT HE ADJUSTED MID-SWING AND NAILED IT."
FLORIDA SHORTSTOP PEDRO MORALES, HITTING IN JUST THE .220s DURING THE POSTSEASON, THE UNTIED THE GAME WITH A DRIVE TO DEEP LEFT. TWO ERRORS BY NAYLOR AND ONE BY MORALES HAD LED TO A PAIR OF UNEARNED RUNS AGAINST SULLIVAN.
EXIT PADILLA. ENTER FLORIDA VETERAN KEVIN ALVAREZ WITH ONE OUT IN THE EIGHTH AND SULLIVAN (4-0) TIRING. ALVAREZ GOT THE NEXT FIVE OUTS, GIVING UP ONLY ONE HIT TO EARN THE SAVE, GIVEN A LITTLE BREATHING ROOM AFTER PARKER DRILLED A SOLO SHOT TO RIGHT IN THE NINTH TO GIVE FLORIDA A TWO-RUN CUSHION.

MIAMI MORNING SUN
MIAMI - A ONE-RUN PITCHERS' DUEL IN THE OPENING GAME OF THE WORLD SERIES WOULDN'T HAVE SURPRISED ANYONE.
AFTER ALL, FLORIDA ACE TOMMY SULLIVAN WAS MATCHED AGAINST YANKEES STAR GIL PADILLA. SULLIVAN'S POSTSEASON STATS INCLUDED A 2-0 RECORD WITH A 1.75 ERA, WHILE PADILLA HAD A 1.74 ERA BUT ONLY A 1-0 RECORD TO SHOW FOR QUALITY STARTS IN EACH OF HIS FOUR STARTS.
ALL THIS DID LEAD TO A ONE-RUN GAME, JUST A SURPRISING RUN AND HIT TOTAL.
"PADILLA'S OUR TOP DOG," SAID NEW YORK MANAGER PAUL MOLITOR. "FLORIDA SHOWED MORE PATIENCE THAN WE THOUGHT THEY WOULD AGAINST PADILLA'S OFF-SPEED STUFF."
BUT THE TEAMS COMBINED FOR 23 TOTAL HITS ON THE NIGHT AND FIVE RUNS OVER THE FIRST TWO INNINGS AS THE MARLINS TOOK A 1-0 SERIES LEAD WITH A 5-4 WIN, KEYED BY THREE RUNS DRIVEN IN FROM NO. 8 HITTER JOHNNY NEWHAN.
MARLINS MANAGER GRADY SIZEMORE ADMITTED HE HAD THOUGHTS OF JUGGLING HIS LINEUP PREGAME AND NOT STARTING NEWHAN.
"HE HADN'T LOOKED ALL THAT GOOD THE PAST FEW DAYS IN BATTING PRACTICE, BUT HE'S ALSO OUR BEST DEFENSIVE OUTFIELDER, SO I THOUGHT IT BEST TO LEAVE HIM IN CENTERFIELD," SIZEMORE SAID.
GOOD MOVE.
FLORIDA LEADOFF HITTER SHINGO SHINJO OPENED THE MARLINS HALF OF THE FIRST INNING WITH A LINE DRIVE TO CENTER AND STOLE SECOND TWO PITCHES LATER. SHINJO MOVED OVER TO THIRD ON JIM KENNEDY'S OPPOSITE WAY GROUNDOUT AND SCORED WHEN AARON CONNER SINGLED PAST FIRST BASE.
DAVE McCLELLAN AND TOBIAS BARBER OPENED THE YANKEES SECOND WITH BASE HITS, AND NEW YORK WOULD PARLAY THE HITS AND AN ERROR BY KENNEDY FOR A 2-1 LEAD.
FLORIDA TOOK THE LEAD IN ITS HALF AS PEDRO MORALES RIPPED A PADILLA CHANGEUP TO CENTER AND MOVED TO THIRD ON A DOUBLE TO RIGHT BY JOVANNY MONTANEZ.
NEWHAN'S RBI SINGLE BROUGHT MONTANEZ HOME BUT SULLIVAN GROUNDED INTO A DOUBLE PLAY AND SHINJO STRUCK OUT TO END THE INNING WITH FLORIDA AHEAD 3-2 AFTER TWO FRAMES.
NEWHAN BEAT OUT A BUNT TO START THE FIFTH AND WAS MOVED AROUND TO THIRD, ALLOWING CONNER TO DRIVE HIM IN WITH A TWO-OUT SINGLE TO CENTER, 4-2 IN THE FLORIDA'S FAVOR.
THE SIXTH INNING BROUGHT IN SINGLE RUNS FOR BOTH TEAMS. ONE OF BARBER'S FOUR HITS MADE IT 4-3 BEFORE NEWHAN DOUBLED IN MONTANEZ AS THE MARLINS EDGED AHEAD 5-3.
BARBER'S RBI SINGLE IN THE EIGHTH ENDED THE SCORING AND KEVIN ALVAREZ PICKED UP THE SAVE.
SULLIVAN WENT SEVEN INNINGS, GIVING UP THREE RUNS ON EIGHT HITS, WALKING NONE AND STRIKING OUT SEVEN. PADILLA GAVE UP ALL FIVE FLORIDA RUNS OVER SIX INNINGS ON 10 HITS AS HIS POSTSEASON ERA ROSE TO 2.68.
THE TEAMS PLAY AT 7:05 TONIGHT.

SIZEMORE GETS A+ FOR MANAGEMENT SKILLS
BY LEE GANNON
SPORTSWRITER
MIAMI MORNING SUN
MIAMI - IT'S NOT OFTEN A MANAGER IS CALLED "BRILLIANT" FOR HIS MID-GAME STRATEGY.
IT'S MORE HIS PRE-GAME PLANNING AND LATE-INNING MOVES HE GETS NOTICED FOR.
NOT FLORIDA'S GRADY SIZEMORE.
"YOU DON'T WIN THAT MANY DIVISION TITLES (EIGHT STRAIGHT WITH THE MARLINS SINCE TAKING OVER IN 2026 AND THREE WITH THE YANKEES FROM 2019 TO 2021 AND A SINGLE WITH CLEVELAND IN 2016) AND NOT CONSISTENTLY MAKE GOOD DECISIONS," SAID SIZEMORE'S COUNTERPART, LARRIBEE TUCKER OF THE PIRATES.
"HE LEARNED THE GAME FROM STRONG TEACHERS AND GAME MANAGERS, LIKE MIKE HARGROVE," SAID LONG-TIME AL SCOUT JOEY PETCHULARE.. "PLUS, GRADY HAS THE EXPERIENCE OF PLAYING WITH TODAY'S KIND OF PLAYER, SO HE'S OBVIOUSLY A PATIENT MAN."
SIZEMORE'S MARLINS ENTERED GAME FOUR OF THE NLDS WITH THE PIRATES IN MIAMI OCT. 5 WITH A 2-1 SERIES LEAD. YET, SIZEMORE BENCHED THREE-QUARTERS OF HIS STARTING INFIELD.
HE REPLACED SHINGO SHINJO AT 3B WITH JARROD NAYLOR, SUBBED IN BENJIE DIORY FOR JIM KENNEDY AT SECOND AND DROPPED GEOFFREY BAUTISTA AT FIRST IN FAVOR OF LITTLE-USED CHAD WILLIAMS.
"MY THOUGHT WAS, 'IF WE LOSE TONIGHT, WE HAVE TO GET ON A PLANE THAT NIGHT AND GO TO PITSBURGH FOR GAME FIVE, SO I WANTED TO GET SOME GUYS SOME REST."
HOW DO REST GUYS LIKE THOSE THREE, OVER, SAY, SHORTSTOP PEDRO MORALES, WHO HADN'T HIT MUCH AT ALL THE INITIAL THREE GAMES?
"WELL, I'M NOT GONNA BENCH MY DEFENSIVE SHORTSTOP, AM I," SIZEMORE ANSWERED WITH A LAUGH. "YOU GUYS (THE MEDIA) WOULD ROAST ME."
ACE FLORIDA STARTER TOMMY SULLIVAN STRIKES OUT THE SIDE. "NOT MUCH MANAGERIAL SKILL THERE," SIZEMORE JOKES.
PIRATES GO DOWN 1-2-3, WITH WILLIAMS MAKING A GOOD PLAY AT FIRST FOR THE FINAL OUT.
WITH THE GAME SCORELESS, SIZEMORE SENSES IT'S TIME TO GET SOME BETTER DEFENDERS INTO THE GAME. KENNEDY COMES INTO SECOND AFTER SHINJO PINCH-HITS FOR NAYLOR AND TAKES OVER AT THIRD.
SHINJO MAKES AN OUTSTANDING PLAY, RANGING TO HIS LEFT, AND FIRING A JUMP-THROW FROM WELL IN FOUL TERRITORY TO NIP A PIRATE RUNNER AT FIRST - AND STOP A LEADOFF DOUBLE.
"THE ROOKIE (NAYLOR) DOESSN'T MAKE THAT PLAY," PETCHULARE STATES. "JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF SIZEMORE'S KNACK FOR TIMING."
AFTER PITTSBURGH TAKES A 1-0 LEAD IN THE INNING BEFORE, SIZEMORE CONTINUES HIS MAGIC.
KENNEDY SINGLES IN WILLIAMS TO MAKE IT 1-ALL. SHINJO MOVES KENNEDY OVER TO SECOND BY HITTING TO THE RIGHT SIDE HOLE, GIVING UP AN OUT TO MOVE RUNNER OVER.
THEN IT'S TIME TO USE BAUTISTA - AND THE VETERAN SINGLES SHARPLY TO CENTER TO SCORE KENNEDY WITH WHAT PROVED TO BE THE WINNING RUN.
SULLIVAN HAS GONE SEVEN TOUGH INNINGS, ALLOWING EIGHT HITS, AND THE SINGLE RUN WHILE STRIKING OUT SIX.
RELIEVERS MATT HAYEK AND MOHAMMED FRY FLIRT WITH DISASTER BUT SIZEMORE PULLS THE RIGHT STRINGS TO KEEP THE PIRATES FROM SCORING. HAYEK ALLOWS A HIT AND A WALK, BUT GETS TWO OUTS WHILE FRY WALKS A BATTER BUT GETS THE THIRD OUT.
IN THE TOP OF THE NINTH, RELIEVER JONATHON KERN GIVES UP A LONG OUT TO PITTSBURGH'S LEADOFF BATTER. SIZEMORE REACHES THE TOP STEP OF THE DUGOUT ON HIS WAY TO REPLACE KERN WITH CLOSER ROBBY MICKLUS - THEN STOPS IN MID-STRIDE.
"I JUST GOT A FEELING KERNIE WOULD GET THE NEXT TWO GUYS,"
HE DOES - COMPLETING SIZEMORE'S "PERFECT" GAME.
NOTES: GAME FOUR IS 7:05 TONIGHT, WITH SULLIVAN (2-0, 1.96 ERA) SCHEULED TO FACE LIONEL SILVA (1-1, 4.50 ERA AND 1.90 WHIP).
THE LITTLE THINGS
DISSECTING THE PERFECTION
TOP OF THE FIRST
ACE FLORIDA STARTER TOMMY SULLIVAN STRIKES OUT THE SIDE. "NOT MUCH MANAGERIAL SKILL THERE," SIZEMORE JOKES.
THIRD INNING
PIRATES GO DOWN 1-2-3, WITH WILLIAMS MAKING A GOOD PLAY AT FIRST FOR THE FINAL OUT.
FOURTH INNING
WITH THE GAME SCORELESS, SIZEMORE SENSES IT'S TIME TO GET SOME BETTER DEFENDERS INTO THE GAME. KENNEDY COMES INTO SECOND AFTER SHINJO PINCH-HITS FOR NAYLOR AND TAKES OVER AT THIRD.
FIFTH INNING
SEVENTH INNING
AFTER PITTSBURGH TAKES A 1-0 LEAD IN THE INNING BEFORE, SIZEMORE CONTINUES HIS MAGIC.
KENNEDY SINGLES IN WILLIAMS TO MAKE IT 1-ALL. SHINJO MOVES KENNEDY OVER TO SECOND BY HITTING TO THE RIGHT SIDE HOLE, GIVING UP AN OUT TO MOVE RUNNER OVER.

MARLINS CLOSE ON NL TITLE
TWO WINS AWAY FROM WORLD SERIES, TALK STILL CENTERS ON SIZEMORE
BY LEE GANNON
SPORTSWRITER
MIAMI MORNING SUN
CHICAGO - THAT THE MARLINS OUTSCORED THE CUBS 18-2 IN THE FIRST TWO GAMES OF THE NLCS IS OF NO CONSEQUENCE - MOST TALK STILL CENTERS ON THE FOURTH AND FINAL GAME OF THE DIVISIONAL SERIES.
FLORIDA MANAGER GRADY SIZEMORE IS BEING HAILED NEAR AND FAR AS CHIEF ORCHESTRATOR OF THE MOST WELL-MANAGED GAME EVER.
"BELIEVE ME, THAT'S LONG OUT OF MINE AND THE PLAYERS' MINDS," SAID SIZEMORE. "OUR FOCUS IS ON GAME THREE AND THE CUBS."
SIZEMORE HAS NOT SAID MUCH ABOUT THE 2-1 SERIES DECIDER, BUT HIS MANAGEMENT SKILLS HAVE BEEN UNDER HEAVY SCRUTINY, TO THE GOOD, AFTER HE BENCHED THREE-QUARTERS OF HIS INFIELD TO START THE PITTSBURGH GAME.
"IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW YOU START, IT'S HOW YOU FINISH," WAS ALL SIZEMORE SAID POST-GAME.
"WHAT GRADY DOES BEFORE AND AT THE END OF GAMES IS BEYOND BELIEF," AN NL SCOUT SAYS. "IT'S WHAT HE DOES MID-GAME THAT MAY MAKE HIM THE BEST MANAGER EVER."
EDITOR'S NOTE: SUN SPORTSWRITER LEE GANNON WILL DISSECT SIZEMORE'S STRAYEGY IN AN UPCOMING ISSUE.

PITTSBURGH - THE OLD JOKE ABOUT TEACHING A CHILD TO COUNT TO 50 BY SHOWING HIM A MARLINS ROSTER STILL FITS, BUT THE COMBINED 77 YEARS OF LIFE EXPERIENCE OF TWO PLAYERS PAID OFF MONDAY
AARON CONNER, 40, DID WHAT HE'S DONE BETTER THAN ANYBODY EVER - DRIVE IN A RUN. CONNER'S TWO-OUT SINGLE EVENED THE SCORES AT ONE APIECE AND JIM KENNEDY, 37, WHO IF HE RETIRES THIS OFFSEASON AS EXPECTED, WILL END HIS CAREER ONE HIT SHY OF 2,000, GOT A BASE KNOCK TO PUT FLORIDA AHEAD 2-1.
THAT SENDS THE TEAMS SOUTH TIED 1-1 IN THE NLDS - AND SWIFTLY PUTS THE MARLINS ON THE SIDE OF MOMENTUM.
"THERE'S NO DOUBT. THAT WAS AN INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT NINTH INNING," CONNER SAID.
BRILLIANT PITCHING BY KEVIN BLACK (SIX INNINGS, SIX STRIKEOUTS, FOUR HITS AND JUST AN UNEARNED RUN) AND MATT HAYEK (ONE HIT IN TWO ININGS) KEPT THE MARLINS IN STRIKING DISTANCE.
BUT BLEAK WAS THE WORD FOR THE DAY BEFORE SHINGO SHINJO'S DOUBLE WITH TWO DOWN IN THE NINTH GAVE THE MARLINS A TAD BIT OF HOPE.
THAT STARTED TO SLIDE AWAY AS CONNER MISSED AT TWO BAD PITCHES - BUT THEN SINGLED SHARPLY TO CENTER TO PLATE SHINJO, BRINGING UP LIKELY NL MVP ALVIN PARKER. THE CATHER RIPPED A DOUBLE TO LEFT AND CONNER MAY HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO SCORE BUT WAS HELD UP.
UP CAME KENNEDY - WHO DIDN'T EVEN MANAGE 100 AT-BATS DURING AN INJURY-PLAGUED SEASON AND WAS 0-FOR-3 FOR THE NIGHT. BUT THE VETERAN SECOND BASEMAN DRILLED A SINGLE TO PUT FLORIDA UP FOR GOOD.
"IT FELT GOOD JUST TO BE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE," KENNEDY SAID.
CASEY RAMIRO AND ROB MICKLUS KEPT THE DOOR SHUT FOR THE MARLINS, WHO HOST PITTSBURGH AT 1:05 P.M. WEDNESDAY IN GAME THREE.

NEW YORK - THE BASH BROTHERS - ALL DOZEN OR SO - CONTINUE TO ROCK THE BALL.
TOO MANY SORE-NECKED YANKEE PITCHERS - FROM TURNING TOO QUICKLY TO SEE WHERE THEIR LATEST OFFERING IS HEADED - CONTINUE TO HOLD THE TEAM BACK.
LEADOFF HITTER HANK CONGER'S TWO HOMERS TUESDAY WERE THE DIFFERENCE - THAT AND A BULLPEN THAT HELD UP LATE AFTER COLLAPSING THE EVENING BEFORE - IN A 3-2 YANKEE WIN OVER TEXAS..
NEW YORK IS NOW 64-52, A PAIR OF GAMES AHEAD OF TORNTO AND FIVE
OVER THE RED SOX.
THE WHITE SOX (67-50) LEAD THE AL CENTRAL BY FOUR OVER 63-54 MINNESOTA AND EIGHT OVER 60-59 DETROIT.
OUT IN THE WEST DIVISION, THE 64-54 ANGELS ARE ONE-HALF GAME IN FRONT OF SEATTLE, A GAME AHEAD OF OAKLAND (63-55) AND SEVEN AHEAD OF TEXAS.
"WHICH ALLL MEANS THE WILD CARD IS A SHOOT-OUT FROM HERE ON IN," SAID YANKEES GM HANK STEINBRENNER.
NEW YORK IS ALMOST IS CLOSE TO HITTING .300 AS A TEAM, PARKED AT .297 AS NEWCOMERS KEN KENDRICK, KYLE RAMIREZ AND MICAH HORN HAVEN'T HIT.
"IT'S THE FIRST TIME UP FOR KYLE AND MICAH, SO IT MAY BE THEY JUST GET A TASTE," STEINBRENNER SAID. "ADDY FERMAMDEZ AND MICHAEL STANTON HAD BEEN SLUMPING, SO WE TRIED TO SHAKE THINGS UP."
MORE SHAKING MAY BE NECESSARY TO FINE-TUNE THE OFFENSE - JUST CROSS YOUR FINGERS PITCHING-WISE, AS NOBODY HAS STOOD OUT YET.

BREW CREW-2011
SPENDING MY FORMATIVE YEARS (KINDERGARTEN THROUGH MIDDLE OF SIXTH GRADE) IN WEST ALLIS, WIS., I WAS CERTAINLY NO STRANGER TO COUNTY STADIUM.
WE LIVED ON 67TH AND GRANT STREET - IT WAS GREAT. WALKED OR RODE MY BIKE TO SCHOOL - NO FEAR OF THE BOGEYMAN DESPITE SHARING THE SAME CITY AS THAT SCUMBAG JEFFREY DAHMER - HAVE NO IDEA WHERE HE LIVED, BUT KNOW I WASN'T CLOSE AT ALL.
GUESS SOME FAVORITE MEMORIES ARE THE 1975 ALL-STAR GAME WHEN I WAS 11 YEARS OLD. WENT WITH A FEW FRIENDS, WHOSE PARENTS, LIKE MY MOM, HAD NO DOUBT PAID THE $10 FOR A BLEACHER SEAT.
PERSONALLY, I THOUGHT IT WAS AN OUTRAGEOUSLY HIGH PRICE - BLEACHER TIX TO BREWERS' GAMES PROBABLY COST 75 CENTS OR A BUCK BACK THEN.
WE HUNG OUT AGAINST THE CENTERFIELD RAIL DURING BATTING PRACTICE, MARVELING HOW CLOSE WE WERE TO SOME OF BASEBALL'S GREATEST STARS. A CARL YAZSTREMKSI BP HOMER LANDED RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF US - WE WERE TOO BUSY SOAKING EVERYTHING ELSE IN TO SEE IT COMING.
ANYWAY, STILL FOLLOWED THEM AS WE MOVED TO DEEP ALABAMA AND THEN EAST TENNESSEE. GOT TO WEAR NO. 4 MY SENIOR YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL (PAUL MOLITOR WAS MY FAVORITE PLAYER), SNAGGING IT FROM OUR CLOSER FOR NO. 9.
I HAD BEEN BUGGING THE POOR GUY - WHO HAD MADE THE VARSITY AS A FRESHMAN - FOR THE NUMBER EVER SINCE MOVING THERE AS A SOPHOMORE IN SPRING 1980.
WORE NO. 3 MY FIRST YEAR, THEN NO. 1,WHICH I HATED AS A JUNIOR. LONG STORY SHORT, I THINK I FINALLY CONVINCED THE GUY TO GIVE UP FOUR WHEN I TOLD HIM THAT'S WHAT MOLITOR WORE, AND HE HIT LEADOFF LIKE I DID, AND THAT OUR CENTERFIELDER WAS NO. 19 AND BATTED SECOND, THE TYPICAL BREWERS LINEUP HAD ROBIN YOUNT BATTING SECOND AND PLAYING CENTER.
IT MUST HAVE WORKED - WE WON THE FIRST OF WHAT EVENTUALLY BECAME EIGHT STATE TITLES (INCLUDING THE LAST FOUR YEARS http://www.admiralbaseball.com/ ). OUR CLOSER? WELL, HE SAVED A STATE-SINGLE SEASON MARK WITH 14 SAVES (OUR RECORD WAS 26-5) AS WE TOOK TWO OF THREE FROM MEMPHIS CHRISTIAN BROTHERS.
THEY HAD COME IN 25-0.
SEE THE WEB SITES http://www.fhs1982statechamps.blogspot.com/ and http://www.tbca.org/ FOR MORE INFO.
DIDN'T WRITE DOWN PICKS, BUT YOU'LL GET THE PICTURE.
QUICK GLANCE: HALLADAY HURT LATE IN SPRING, SLOTTED AT 4 IN ROTATION. TEAM HAS STARTED VERY SLOWLY - NO OFFENSE, MAIN CULPRITS ARE BRIAN McCANN AND CARLOS SANTANA.
FOR THE MOST PART, I JUST HIT IN ALL MY DIFFERENT TEAMS UNTIL IMPORTANT GAMES AND THE PLAYOFFS, WHEN I WILL PITCH.

YANKEES STREAKING
JAYS STAY CLOSE IN TIGHT AL EAST RACE
NEW YORK - THE YANKEES SANDWICHED A THREE-GAME LOSING SKID AFTER THE ALL-STAR BREAK AROUND FOUR- AND THREE-GAME WINNING STREAKS, AND LEAD THEIR DIVISION BY A SINGLE GAME OVER TORONTO.
WHEN NEW YORK WON, IT WAS IN SHOOTOUT FASHION. WHEN THEY FELL, IT WAS BY A SNIPER SHOT, MAINLY.
NEW YORK POSTED WINS BY SCORES OF 8-5, 11-6, 7-4, 14-12, 12-10, 7-6, 6-4, 8-6 AND 10-9.
LOSSES WERE BY 9-8, 6-3, 4-3, 7-4 AND ON THURSDAY, 2-1.
"DESPITE SOME OF THOSE SCORES, WE'RE ACTUALLY THROWING THE BALL BETTER," MANAGER JOE GIRARDI SAID.
HE SINGLED OUT RECENTLY RECALLED MARK ROGERS AND MIKE LEAKE AND SAID HE EXPECTS GOOD THINGS OUT OF ALEXI NOVOA, WHO WILL GET A START NEXT WEEK.
THE YANKEES (58-47) HOST OAKLAND FOR A THREE-GAME SET STARTING TONIGHT, THE HIT THE ROAD TO BOSTON AND TAMPA. THEY'LL FACE TORONTO FOR FIVE GAMES IN SEPTEMBER.
NEW YORK LEADS THE MAJORS IN HITTING (.297), RUNS (701), HITS (1128), HOMERS (238 TO RUNNER-UP ANAHEIM'S 154) RBIs AND SLUGGING PERCENTAGE.
BUT THEIR PITCHERS ARE LAST IN ERA (5.72).

NEW YORK PUSHED ITS OVERALL MARK TO 42-31 (15-5 IN JUNE) AND ITS HEROS WERE NAMED GOFF, CONGER AND RAINEY?
LaRUSSA, OWNER OF A LAW DEGREE, MUTTERED THOSE NAMES ALOUD, LIKENING THEM TO A LAW FIRM THAT PERHAPS ADVERTISED ON LATE-NIGHT TELEVISION.
MAYBE IT WAS JEFF GOFF, HANK CONGER AND DAVE RAINEY WHO HAD KEPT THE ST. LOUIS MANAGER UP TIL THE WEE HOURS WATCHING TV.
AFTER ALL, NONE ARE HOUSEHOLD NAMES - YET. GOFF BELTED A PAIR OF TWO-RUN HOMERS, INCLUDING A DECISIVE NINTH-INNING BLAST IN FRIDAY'S 6-4 WIN, RAINEY PITCHED TWO INNINGS OF SCORELESS BALL IN SATURDAY'S 3-2 WIN AND CONGER CONTINUED TO SWING A HOT BAT WITH FOUR HITS IN SUNDAY'S 8-4 BROOM-WAVER.
"NOW, I'M NOT THAT OUT OF TOUCH," LaRUSSA ADMITTED. "I KNOW GOFF AND CONGER HAVE A CHANCE TO BE REAL GOOD AND RAINEY LOOKS DECENT. BUT I NEVER IMAGINED A SWEEP. WE'D LIKE TO SEE THEM IN OCTOBER."
YANKEES MANAGER JOE GIRARDI DIDN'T DISCOUNT A NEW YORK-CARDS WORLD SERIES, AS HIS TEAM IS MERE PERCENTAGE POINTS FROM HAVING THE BEST RECORD IN THE AL, WHILE ST. LOUIS STILL TOPS THE NL AT 45-28.
AS HAS BEEN THE CASE THE PAST 18 MONTHS, THE YANKEES ARE LOOKING TO DEAL A GLUT OF CORNER INFIELDERS, UNDEPENDABLE STARTERS AND A PLETHORA OF CLOSERS FOR YOUNGER ARMS. GIRARDI SAID A NUMBER OF DEALS ARE IN THE WORKS.
NEW YORK LEADS THE MAJORS IN HITTING, RUNS, HOMERS, RBIs, SLUGGING AND ON-BASE PERCENTAGE, BUT RANK AT THE BOTTOM IN ERA AND HOME RUNS GIVEN UP.
