MIAMI  MORNING SUN

MIAMI- YANKEES PITCHER GIL PADILLA WAS BRILLIANT - BUT JUST NOT OUTSTANDING LONG ENOUGH IN GAME FOUR OF THE WORLD SERIES.

PADILLA SLAMMED THE DOOR, ALLOWING FLORIDA A SINGLE RUN THROUGH SEVEN INNINGS AS THE YANKEES HAD BUILT A 3-1 LEAD. BUT TROUBLE CAME IN THE EIGHTH AND PADILLA WAS CHARGED WITH ALL THREE MARLINS RUNS AS FLORIDA RALLIED FOR A 5-3 WIN AND A 3-1 SERIES LEAD.

"PADILLA WAS JUST TOYING WITH US AT TIMES," CATCHER ALVIN PARKER. "BUT WE KEPT OUR CONCENTRATION LEVELS HIGH AND EVENTUALLY HIT HIS FEW MISTAKES."

PARKER'S SOLO BLAST IN THE SECOND INNING HAD STAKED MARLINS ACE TOMMY SULLIVAN TO A 1-0 LEAD. BUT TOBIAS BARBER'S HOMER IN THE FIFTH MARKED A RUN OF THREE STRAIGHT INNINGS THE NEW YORK PIT SINGLE RUNS ON THE BOARD TO TAKE A 3-1 LEAD INTO THE TOP OF THE EIGHTH.

PADILLA STRUCK OUT ROOKIE JARROD NAYLOR, THEN SURRENDERED A JOVANNY MONTANEZ DOUBLE. JOHNNY HEWHAN THEN CRUSHED A HIGH DRIVE INTO THE RIGHT-FIELD SEATS TO MAKE IT 3-3.

"IT WAS A GOOD CHANGE-UP," PADILLA SAID. "GIVE THAT GUY (NEWHAN) CREDIT, I THOUGHT HE WAS TOO FAR IN FRONT OF IT, BUT HE ADJUSTED MID-SWING AND NAILED IT."

FLORIDA SHORTSTOP PEDRO MORALES, HITTING IN JUST THE .220s DURING THE POSTSEASON, THE UNTIED THE GAME WITH A DRIVE TO DEEP LEFT. TWO ERRORS BY NAYLOR AND ONE BY MORALES HAD LED TO A PAIR OF UNEARNED RUNS AGAINST SULLIVAN.

EXIT PADILLA. ENTER FLORIDA VETERAN KEVIN ALVAREZ WITH ONE OUT IN THE EIGHTH AND SULLIVAN (4-0) TIRING. ALVAREZ GOT THE NEXT FIVE OUTS, GIVING UP ONLY ONE HIT TO EARN THE SAVE, GIVEN A LITTLE BREATHING ROOM AFTER PARKER DRILLED A SOLO SHOT TO RIGHT IN THE NINTH TO GIVE FLORIDA A TWO-RUN CUSHION.

GAME FIVE IS 7:05 THIS EVENING. A YANKEE MOVES THE SERIES TO MIAMI FOR GAME SIX TUESDAY NIGHT.
