SOX LEAD WILD CARD
TEAM SEES GOOD THINGS IF IT MAKES PLAYOFFS

CLEVELAND - ALMOST THREE WEEKS AFTER "HITGATE," THE WHITE SOX ARE POISED TO CAPTURE THE AL WILD CARD AND TRY AND MAKE A LONG POSTSEASON RUN.

CHICAGO IS 83-71 HEADING INTO TONIGHT'S GAME AT CLEVELAND, 2 1/2 GAMES IN FRONT OF BOSTON AND 3 AHEAD OF DETROIT.

THE SOX FINISH THE SEASON IN THE SOUTHSIDE WITH THREE GAMES APIECE AGAINST TAMPA (69-85) AND MINNESOTA (AL-CENTRAL CHAMP).

"WE DEFINITELY FEEL CONFIDENT WITH OUR LAST SIX GAMES AT HOME," SAID FIRST-YEAR MANAGER ROGER AVILES.

BOSTON (84-71) PLAYS AT BALTIMORE TONIGHT, GETS A DAY OFF, THEN ALSO HAVE ITS REMAINING SIX GAMES AT HOME, VS. THE YANKEES (84-70) AND ORIOLES (64-91).

DETROIT PLAYS AT ANAHEIM THE NEXT TWO GAMES, FOLLOWED BY A THREE-GAME SET AT AL CENTRAL WINNER MINNESOTA (92-62)  BEFORE RETURNING TO THE MOTOR CITY FOR A TRIO OF GAMES AGAINST CLEVELAND (74-81).

"WE CAN'T WORRY ABOUT BOSTON AND THE YANKEES FIGHTING FOR THEIR DIVISION TITLE, OR THAT MINNESOTA HAS WRAPPED UP OUR DIVISION," AVILES SAID. "WE JUST HAVE TO KEEP WINNING."

THE WHITE SOX HAVE GONE 10-5 AFTER THE TEAM HITTING MECHANIC WAS PROPERLY RESTIRED TO THE VETERAN LEVEL, AFTER THREE SOX WORKER ALLEGEDLY CHANGED THE LEVEL TO "LEGEND," HELPING CAUSE A 5-19 TAILSPIN BEFORE IT WAS DISCOVERED.
