CHICAGO - IT'S ALL IN THE WRISTS FOR FAMED GUITARIST CARLOS SANTANA.
DITTO FOR THE SAME-NAMED WHITE SOX CATCHER.
THE SOUTHSIDE'S CARLOS SANTANA CRUSHED FOUR HOME RUNS OVER THE FINAL TWO GAMES OF THE REGULAR SEASON TO ALLOW CHICAGO TO CAPTURE THE AL'S WILD CARD SLOT.
THE WHITE SOX FINISHED AT 87-75 WHILE DETROIT FELL JUST SHORT WITH A 86-76 SEASON MARK.
CHICAGO OPENS UP A BEST-OF-FIVE SERIES AT NEW YORK FRIDAY.
WITH THE SOX NEEDING A WIN WEDNESDAY TO AVOID AN EXTRA GAME IN CASE THEY LOST AND DETROIT WON, SANTANA DRILLED A TWO-RUN SHOT TO DEEP LEFT AFTER ADDY FERNANDEZ SINGLED TO OPEN THE GAME AND CARL CRAWFORD REACHED ON A FIELDER'S CHOICE.
FERNANDEZ POPPED HIS 15TH DINGER OF LOSER JORGE DE LA ROSA (13-13), THE SOLO SHOT MAKING IT 4-0 AFTER TWO. THE TWINS WOULD ADD A PAIR OF RUNS OFF WHITE SOX WINNER BRANDON MORROW (14-9), BUT THAT WAS AS CLOSE AS MINNESOTA WOULD GET.
SANTANA ADDED ANOTHER HOMER, UPPING HIS EASON TOTAL TO 31, WHILE MIGUEL CABRERA (43), AARON CONNER (40) AND BEN ZOBRIST (23) JOINED THE HOME RUN PARADE.
THE WHITE SOX BLASTED EIGHT HOMERS IN THE THREE-GAME SET AS SANTANA'S TWO BLASTS AND THREE RIBBIES LED THE WHITE OX TO A 4-2 WIN TUESDAY. THE TIGERS WON 6-0 TUESDAY AND 4-3 WEDNESDAY OVER CLEVELAND TO KEEP THE PRESSURE ON CHICAGO.
THE SOX LED THE MAJORS WITH 261 HOMERS.
